Hinterland/Y Gwyll

Synopsis

Mae Hinterland/Y Gwyll yn gyfres dditectif 9 x 96’. Wedi ei saethu yn Gymraeg ac yn Saesneg mae’n gyd-gynhyrchiad rhwng Fiction Factory a S4C, Tinopolis ac All3Media Rhyngwladol ar gyfer S4C, BBC Cymru a BBC 4.

O dwyni tywod gwyntog yr arfordir i’r cefnwlad gwyllt a thu hwnt, Aberystwyth yw’r lleoliad perffaith ar gyfer y gyfres dditectif newydd yma. Lle sydd yn byw yn nôl ei chyfraith ei hun, pair naturiol ble daw hanes a chwedl wyneb yn wyneb â’r byd cyfoes.  Gwaed, pridd a pherthyn.  Dyma Y Gwyll.

I’r byd hwn cama DCI TOM MATHIAS, dyn hynod sy’n dianc rhag ei orffennol.  Wedi gadael ei fywyd yn Llundain y tu cefn iddo, mae’n ynysu ei hun ar gyrion y dref – tref llawn cyfrinachau mor ddu a dinistriol â’i rhai e.

Caiff MATHIAS ei bartneru gyda DI MARED RHYS.  Yn ddeallus a dwys, mae hi’n fam sengl sy’n ddoethach na’i 33 mlynedd.  Daw’r ddau i ddatblygu perthynas cryf wrth i MATHIAS, y dieithryn enigmatig, a MARED, y ferch leol bragmatig, gael eu taflu at eu gilydd.

MATHIAS yw calon pob stori.  Mae’n ddyn ‘dyn ni’n ymddiried ynddo’n reddfol, dyn sy’n gwybod taw nid lle wyt ti’n edrych, ond sut wyt ti’n edrych sy’n allweddol wrth geisio datrus y trosedd eithaf hwnnw – llofruddiaeth.

The rise of the Celtic noir

Sean Cubitt, The Conversation, 27 May 2014

Y Gwyll, the Welsh title of the recent BBC drama Hinterland, translates as “The Dusk”: perhaps programmers were worried that viewers would mistake it for Twilight? Vampires and zombies certainly feature in a number of TV dramas at present, and in one respect that’s true of the series. Starting with a particularly haunted and ghostly episode set in a deserted children’s home, the four episodes broadcast this spring were characterised by the weight of the dead upon the living.
